II – Life Science:
PreK – 2
Learning Standard 3
“Recognize that plants and
animals have life cycles and that life cycles vary for different living
things.” One suggestion in the
frameworks for this standard – “Using live organisms or pictures/models,
observe the changes in form during the life cycle.”

PreK – 2
Learning Standard 8
“Identify ways in which an
organism’s habitat provides for its basic needs.
(Nutrients, shelter, etc)
Grades 3 – 5
Learning Standard 3
“Recognize that plants and
animals go through predictable life cycles that include birth, growth,
development, reproduction, and death.”
Classroom Idea: Using something as simple as a child's small wading pool, you can create a mosquito breeding site during the late spring and early fall. Fill the pool with a few inches of water, add some organic material (grass cuttings and leaves) and you will have created a breeding site for container type mosquitoes such as the Culex pipiens. They will lay their eggs on the water's surface.

Take some of the water and eggs (from the wading pool, etc) and place them in a glass container in your classroom (Plastic containers may inhibit eggs hatching). Make a small screened in box and place the glass container in the box; your students can observe the full life cycle - egg rafts, larvae, pupae, and adult.
Please send us examples of your lessons. With your permission we will share them with other educators on our website. info@plymouthmosquito.com.
